Bed Preparation
With professional maintenance, the soil will be adequately prepared and preserved, with optimum aeration, drainage and water retention. Soil analysis will be performed to identify the needs of the flowers during each season. Fertilizer and preemergent weed control may also be added during bed preparation.
The type, spacing, and placement will be determined by the type of plants, their estimated size after full growth, the season during which they are being planted and the cost to the consumer. A landscaping professional can tailor an attractive seasonal flower bed to the needs of each client. After planting, the plants must be watered thoroughly, and regularly, keeping the leaves dry and without overwatering. Soaker hoses are ideal for seasonal flowerbeds. Fertilizer should also be applied. Typically, annuals do not require too much fertilizer and will suffer from root damage if it is over-applied. A professional will best know the needs of each plant.
Finally, an optional mulch layer can be added, giving a tailored appearance to complete the look. It is not only cosmetic, however, as it also reduces weed emergence and preserves soil moisture, which is particularly helpful in dry climates. Each year, the mulch can be worked into the soil, enriching it before planting.
