Fertilization
All lawns require specific nutrients to survive and flourish. These nutrients deplete over time as the lawn uses them for healthy growth. Many people place too much of an emphasis on spring and summer fertilization because the lawn is actively growing. While some fertilizer is needed during spring and summer, applying too much can result in disease and excessive growth (requiring unnecessarily frequent mowing).
Fertilization during fall (September through December) is optimum for home lawns and will benefit them more than any other intervention. The many advantages of fall fertilization include improved heat and drought tolerance during the summer as well as an improved root system, which results in a healthier plant. Additionally, disease and weed problems are typically less severe when fertilization occurs in the fall.
