Excessive Moisture
Since many funguses are likely to prosper in warm, humid environments, the days following rainfall are the time when fungus emergence is most likely. Each fungus grows according to the environment, some prefer soil that is not well-fertilized; others favor soil that is over-fertilized. While mulching grass clippings can be beneficial during most of the growing season, dead clippings are easy prey for air borne fungus spores and should be bagged during times of fungus outbreaks.
In the same way that humidity contributes to fungus occurrences, improper irrigation can also exacerbate the problem. All irrigation should be done late at night, immediately prior to daybreak, never in the evening or right after dark. Additionally, proper drainage is essential. Areas that hold standing water are breeding grounds for rapid fungus growth.
